On a mild October evening an old colonel in New York State sits by an overbuilt fire with the mother of his daughter’s intended husband, and the family’s elders take counsel over the match. Behind the courtship lies a story of disinheritance and a man lost to the far West, whose return tests both families.
Foote, best known for her stories of Western mining camps, sets East and West face to face in this novel. Download the free EPUB.
