The poet and travel writer Charles Warren Stoddard recalls California as he knew it from boyhood: the bells of San Gabriel and the old missions, crossing the Isthmus of Panama in the 1850s, the young city of San Francisco and its characters, and the egg-gatherers of the Farallon Islands. This edition appeared after the 1906 earthquake had swept away most of the landmarks he describes.
