Deutsch, a professor at Hebrew Union College, compresses more than two and a half thousand years into a short, careful narrative. Chapters move from the Babylonian captivity and the fall of Jerusalem through the era of the Talmud, Jewish life under Islam, medieval Europe, the age of oppression to 1492 and the slow improvement that followed.
