Matthew Priestley is thirty-six, rich, and so set in his ways that his young friend Pat calls him a vegetable marrow. To wake him up, Pat and his set of bright young people from the Nesbitt circle arrange for Priestley to believe he has shot a man. Their game runs out of control, with handcuffs, red ink, a fugitive and Inspector Cottingham, who smells blood.
