Marie Leroux, widow of Jacques Constantin, and her accomplice Claude Perregaud were too obscure to make any list of great criminals, Dumas admits, yet their story is worth telling for the retribution that overtook them. Much of it follows the adventures of the Chevalier Quennebert and the intrigues around the beautiful Angélique.
