A settler’s boy, Alan, comes to know the Basket Woman who visits his family’s ranch, and through her he wakes into the old time when men and beasts talked together and Coyote was the friend of man. The stories include the stream that ran away, the cheerful glacier, the crooked fir, the sugar pine and the Fire Bringer.
