A prose English version of the thirteenth-century Provençal Roman de Flamenca. After marrying the beautiful Flamenca, the lord Archambaut is seized by jealousy and shuts her away, letting her out only for church. The knight Guillem, enamoured from afar, disguises himself as a cleric and courts her one whispered word at a time during the service.
