A Yale professor’s companion to his survey of English literature, written as a continuous essay rather than a primer. Beers moves from the colonial divines through the Revolutionary pamphleteers and the era of expansion to the Concord writers, the Cambridge scholars, antislavery literature and the poets and novelists of the later century, choosing only the authors he thought most significant.
A compact Victorian view of the American canon, interesting both as criticism and as a period document. Download the free EPUB.
