In Salem in the days of the clipper ships, the Ammidon household waits anxiously for an overdue vessel. When Captain Gerrit Ammidon at last comes home, he brings with him Taou Yuen, an aristocratic Manchu wife of great poise and beauty, and the shock of her presence works through his family and the opium-haunted Edward Dunsack.
