Consul Karsten Bernick is the most admired man in a small Norwegian coastal town, a shipowner whose fortune and good name rest on a scandal he let another man carry. When his brother-in-law Johan and the outspoken Lona Hessel return from America, the buried past and a dangerously unseaworthy ship threaten everything Bernick has built.
The first of Ibsen’s great prose dramas of modern life, and a sharp study of civic hypocrisy that still lands. Download the free EPUB.
