In 1803 the trading ship Boston was attacked at Nootka Sound on Vancouver Island and almost all her crew were killed. Jewitt, the young armourer, was spared because he could forge tools and weapons, and spent nearly three years as a captive of the chief Maquinna, observing whaling, feasts, warfare and village life. Robert Brown’s edition adds an introduction and notes.

A vivid captivity narrative and an early, close-up record of Northwest Coast life. Download the free EPUB.
