Brown tells of his boyhood and youth in slavery in and around St. Louis: hired out on steamboats and to a slave trader, witness to whippings and sales that broke families apart, and repeatedly scheming to escape. The book is dedicated to Wells Brown, the Ohio Quaker who sheltered him after his flight and gave him the name he carried.
One of the essential slave narratives, by the man who went on to write Clotel, the first published novel by an African American. Download the free EPUB.
