Born into slavery in Georgia and secretly taught to read, Susie King Taylor escaped to the Union lines on St. Simon’s Island in 1862 and spent the war with the 1st South Carolina Volunteers, later the 33rd United States Colored Infantry. She served as laundress, nurse and teacher to the soldiers, and here recalls camp life, expeditions along the coast, and the years of freedom that followed.
The only published Civil War memoir by an African American woman, and an essential first-hand account of Black soldiers’ service. Download the free EPUB.
