In 1890 the freemason Anthime Armand-Dubois comes to Rome for his rheumatism and is converted by a miracle, while a band of swindlers persuades devout families that the real Pope has been imprisoned and replaced by an impostor. Through this farce moves the young Lafcadio, who decides to commit a crime without any motive at all.
