Arthur Helps begins with the Portuguese discoveries of the fifteenth century, then follows Christopher Columbus from his early years through his long suit at the Spanish court, the first landfall in the New World and the later voyages. He is frank about the cruelty toward the native peoples and the court enmities, especially of Bishop Fonseca, that brought the admiral down.
