Pierson introduces children to the animals of the farm as neighbours with their own worries and vanities: a lamb proud of the longest tail, a duckling who does not know what to do, a fussy queen bee, a bay colt learning to mind, and a lame duckling who learns he can comfort the blind horse. Each short tale slips in real natural history.
