Lord Hampstead, heir to the Marquis of Kingsbury, holds radical opinions that horrify his family, and his sister Lady Frances shocks them further by loving George Roden, a clerk in the Post Office. Hampstead himself falls for Marion Fay, the delicate daughter of a Quaker clerk in Holloway, and both romances test what rank really means.
