Sir Charles Vandrift made his fortune in the diamond country near Kimberley and prides himself that no sharper can take him in. His secretary and brother-in-law Seymour Wentworth tells how, across Europe, a swindler called Colonel Clay does exactly that, again and again, as a Mexican seer, a Tyrolean castle owner and a dealer in old masters.
