Allen gathers his early short fiction, much of it touched by science, evolution and the uncanny. The opening tale follows the Reverend John Creedy, an African educated at Oxford who returns to his people, and others include Dr. Greatrex’s engagement, Mr. Chung, the curate of Churnside and a high-society episode, with illustrations by George du Maurier. Its views of race and empire belong to the 1880s.
