George Horton was the American consul in Smyrna when the city burned in September 1922. He sets the catastrophe in a long account of massacres and persecutions of Christians in the Ottoman Empire, then describes the fire and the flight of Greeks and Armenians to the harbour. Horton writes as a passionate partisan, and his generalisations about Turks reflect that anger.
