Ballou collects stories from the lives of writers, artists and thinkers: how they worked, what they earned, their early struggles, eccentricities, disappointments in love, ill health and late recognition. Hawthorne, Johnson, Goldsmith, Scott, Byron and dozens more appear in brief sketches arranged as a long, browsing conversation.
