In 1866 General James Rusling of the Quartermaster’s Department was ordered to inspect army posts from Fort Leavenworth to the Pacific coast. His route ran up the Platte to Denver and the mines, through the Rockies to Salt Lake City and on to California and the Pacific Northwest, all described with an eye for landscape, towns and people.
A lively first-hand picture of the West just after the Civil War, before the railroad. Download the free EPUB.
