In the title story a young doctor is summoned through the winter snows to the castle of Nideck, where the old count suffers a mysterious recurring illness. The servants whisper of a wolfish ancestor and a ghostly woman who haunts the mountains, and he sets out to follow her trail. Other supernatural tales by the French partnership complete the volume.
