At a Surrey village fair, a mysterious old strolling player and the child Sophy perform for the crowds. Their story becomes entangled with that of Guy Darrell, a wealthy, embittered statesman, and his young kinsman Lionel Haughton, while the villain Jasper Losely pursues the girl through the London world of the 1850s.
