In 1876 Stevenson and his friend Sir Walter Simpson paddled two canoes from Antwerp along the Willebroek canal, the Sambre and the Oise toward Paris. Rained on, mistaken for pedlars, turned away from inns and welcomed by bargemen, they drift through Maubeuge, Landrecies and Origny, and the young author muses on travel, work and happiness.
Stevenson’s first published book, already full of the charm that would carry him to Travels with a Donkey. Download the free EPUB.
