Elihu Burritt, the American peace campaigner known as the Learned Blacksmith, chose to walk rather than ride the railway from London to the northern tip of Scotland. Along the way he studies farming, from Mechi’s model farm at Tiptree to drainage and steam ploughing, listens to larks, talks with old men on the road and meets the good men of each parish.
A gentle, curious portrait of mid-Victorian Britain seen at walking pace. Download the free EPUB.
