A Quaker writer from Lancaster County began with an Atlantic Monthly essay on her German-speaking neighbours in 1869 and expanded it into this book. She describes Amish worship, a Dunker love-feast, the cloister at Ephrata, the Moravians of Bethlehem and the Schwenkfelders, along with farm life, food and customs, and a sketch of Friends who aided fugitive slaves.
An affectionate early account of Pennsylvania’s plain people, valued by historians of the Amish and Brethren. Download the free EPUB.
