George Smalley grew up in the New England of Webster, Sumner, Phillips and Garrison, studied at Yale and Harvard Law School, and saw Boston surrender a fugitive slave in 1854. He went on to a long career as a London correspondent, and here sketches the people he knew on both sides of the Atlantic, from Emerson and Dana to English editors and statesmen.
A shrewd, anecdotal memoir for readers interested in nineteenth-century journalism and Anglo-American public life. Download the free EPUB.
