Between 1872 and 1876 Ernest Giles led five expeditions into the dry heart of the continent, pushing west from South Australia with horses, camels and a handful of men. His journals record waterholes found and lost, burning country, encounters with Aboriginal people, and the death in 1874 of his companion Alfred Gibson, for whom he named the Gibson Desert.
A first-hand record of one of the hardest overland crossings ever made, for anyone drawn to desert exploration. Download the free EPUB.
