Travelling largely alone and on very little money, the Viennese traveller Ida Pfeiffer sails to Rio de Janeiro, rides into the Brazilian interior, rounds Cape Horn to Valparaiso, and crosses the Pacific by way of Tahiti to Canton. From there she pushes on through Singapore, Ceylon, Madras, Calcutta and Benares, recording dances, temples, markets and hardships in a plain, unadorned voice.
An early classic of women’s travel writing, remarkable for its nerve and its candour. Download the free EPUB.
