The War of the Spanish Succession becomes a lawsuit among tradesmen: honest, choleric John Bull the clothier and his crafty neighbour Nic. Frog quarrel with Lord Strutt and old Lewis Baboon, while the lawyer Hocus milks the case. Arbuthnot’s allegory mocks the war party, Marlborough and the Dutch alliance with Tory relish.
