Hector Ratichon, by his own cheerful admission a liar, thief and forger of boundless vanity, recounts the schemes he hatched in Paris with his hapless assistant Théodore. A countess’s lost lapdog named Carissimo, the affair of the toys, a fool’s paradise and honour among thieves supply episodes in which his plans go spectacularly wrong.
