A wholesome but impulsive boy arrives for his first term at college and has to find his feet among upperclassmen, hazing, new friends and professors who make Latin come alive while Greek drags on forever. Races run in the dark, mistakes made and repaired, and the hope of earning his athletic letter fill a year the author says was drawn partly from real events.
