For nearly twenty years Dr Johnson was a cherished guest in the Streatham house of Hester Thrale, later Mrs Piozzi. Published in 1786, two years after his death, her recollections catch him at dinner and in conversation: his sayings, his rudeness and tenderness, his fears, and his opinions on food, marriage, books and poverty, all from someone who saw him daily at home.
An intimate, lively counterpart to Boswell, and essential for anyone who loves Johnson’s talk. Download the free EPUB.
