Psyche, a mortal girl whose beauty rivals Aphrodite’s, is carried off to a palace where an unseen lover visits her only by night; when she breaks his one command she must win him back through the goddess’s ordeals. Carpenter retells the episode from the Golden Ass of Apuleius and adds a group of his own early poems, among them pieces written at Cambridge and by the Arno.
