In the early 1900s an American journalist and his wife disguised themselves as Italian peasants. They lived in a New York tenement, sailed to Naples in steerage, travelled through Rome, Calabria and Sicily, and then returned to America with a Sicilian family, recording the agents, swindlers, inspections and hopes of the emigrant trade, with photographs taken along the way.
A remarkable piece of undercover reporting on the great Italian migration, with opinions very much of its moment. Download the free EPUB.
