Over omelette and wine, old Etienne Gerard, once a colonel of Hussars under Napoleon, tells how he stormed the Castle of Gloom, dealt with the brothers of Ajaccio, played cards for a kingdom and won his medal. He is magnificently brave, utterly sure of his own charm, and almost never understands the joke at his expense.
