Mr. Glowry lives in a decaying abbey in Lincolnshire with his son Scythrop, who dreams of secret societies and cannot choose between two young women. Guests include the transcendental Mr. Flosky, who works by candlelight at noon, and the misanthropic poet Mr. Cypress. Peacock’s talk-filled satire sends up the morbid fashions of the Romantic age.
A short, sparkling 1818 comedy whose targets include Shelley, Coleridge and Byron. Download the free EPUB.
