Four travellers sheltering from the rain at a Yorkshire inn on the great northern road are astonished when a knight in full armour rides in. He is Sir Launcelot Greaves, a generous young baronet who, crossed in love, has set out to redress wrongs across Georgian England, with a reluctant squire, a quack, a misanthrope and a corrupt justice or two in his path.
