Augustus Carp of Mon Repos, Angela Gardens, has no doubt of his own virtue. From his anxious birth, his indigestion and his difficult christening to his career as a churchgoer, campaigner and moral guardian of Peckham Rye, he records his life in perfect solemnity, never noticing what the reader sees on every page. It appeared anonymously in 1924.
