This is a full translation of the Kriegsbrauch im Landkriege, the German General Staff’s handbook on the customs of land warfare, issued for the instruction of officers. J. H. Morgan’s long introduction and marginal commentary argue that it treats the Hague Conventions as little more than paper, and the text covers ruses, hostages, requisitions, the treatment of civilians and the conduct of occupation.
