The field marshal who led the British Expeditionary Force to France in August 1914 tells the story of its first campaign: the sailing of the army, the retreat from Mons, the Battle of the Marne, the Aisne, the fall of Antwerp and the desperate First Battle of Ypres. Written after his removal from command, it defends his decisions and criticises others.
