After twenty years as a missionary at Peshawar, Hughes compiled this alphabetical cyclopedia of the doctrines, rites, ceremonies, customs and technical terms of Islam. Entries range from the life of the Prophet and the text of the Qur’an to prayer, pilgrimage, law, sects and saints. He states plainly that it is meant as exposition rather than controversy, though his viewpoint is that of a Christian clergyman.
