A penniless young man lands on the San Francisco wharf and accepts a stranger’s dying commission; a widow in the foothills keeps up appearances; Colonel Starbottle takes charge of a ward; and the gambler Jack Hamlin is nursed back to health in a Spanish mission. Seven stories revisit the California of Harte’s mining-camp fame.
Among the last collections Harte published, rich in his familiar sentiment and irony. Download the free EPUB.
