Jim Wynnegate, an English officer, shoulders the blame for a theft committed by his cousin to protect the woman he loves, Diana, and leaves for the American West. On a Wyoming ranch he marries a Ute woman who saves his life, and the novel follows their son and the claims of the family he left behind.
