The story opens in the abandoned Mormon city of Nauvoo and follows the Latter-day Saints west to the Great Basin. At its centre is a fervent young convert whose devotion to the church is tested by a woman who has left the faith, by the violence of the frontier, and finally by the plain words of the Sermon on the Mount.
An early novel by the author of Ruggles of Red Gap; its portrait of the Mormon leadership is hostile, as was usual in 1903. Download the free EPUB.
