In the title story a nineteen-year-old is sent to run a ranch full of hard men and must deal with a jug of whiskey smuggled in among them. The other stories range across Idaho, Wyoming and the plains, from army posts and railway eating-houses to a settler’s wagon and the bleak tale of Hank’s woman.
