On the site of a forgotten battle stands the house of Doctor Jeddler, who regards life as a farce. His daughters Grace and Marion share a deep affection, and Marion is engaged to his ward Alfred Heathfield, who is leaving to study abroad. The household servants Clemency Newcome and Benjamin Britain supply the comedy while a quiet act of sacrifice unfolds.
