Senator Elias Gotobed comes to the sleepy town of Dillsborough to study English institutions and finds them indefensible: the hunt, the Church, primogeniture, the whole order of rank. Around his blunt remarks Trollope sets two courtships, the unscrupulous Arabella Trefoil’s campaign to land a rich husband and the quieter question of whom Mary Masters will marry.
Trollope turns an outsider’s eye on his own society, with one of his most memorable fortune-hunting heroines. Download the free EPUB.
