Mrs. Lirriper, a widow who keeps lodgings in Norfolk Street off the Strand, talks to the reader in a torrent of good-hearted reminiscence about lodgers, rival landladies and servant girls. At its heart is the story of a young woman who comes to her in trouble, and the baby boy left in her keeping.
